Somatic Stress Relief Practice

Stress can limit our sense of space, like the walls of life are closing in, and we can feel constricted and overwhelmed. So often, we might try to change the circumstances; however, there is so much more power and immediate relief in changing our relationship with space! Here’s a simple practice for reclaiming your space.

Self-Support Practice

One of the most foundational messages we receive in our early life from caregivers is, "I got you." It is transmitted through their touch, words, quality/timbre of voice, actions, and movements. It fosters an ecosystem of safety to which we can yield into someone else or something in ourselves that needs support. We might even have people in our lives who do that for us as adults, and that's beautiful. And sometimes, they are unavailable or were never available, and we learned to offer ourselves that deep safety in the absence of that in our childhood and/or now, as adults; that's also beautiful. This is a heartfelt practice to return us to that embodied state of support.

Unlock Tunnel Vision

Have you ever felt like your attention got locked into a stressor, and you couldn't shift your focus or energy from it? This process is an evolutionary design to ensure we address and adapt. For example, during a stress response, our eyes narrow, and we experience a momentary reduction of our peripheral vision, honing in on what needs to be attended to. When we have not fully processed our stress, we can get stuck in a hypervigilant pattern, keeping us in a recurring stress response. In this scenario, we are so attentive to the stressor that we lose sight of what else is in our environment, including ourselves, and the bigger picture of the situation. Here is a practice to help unlock tunnel vision and restore a more flexible perception.

Gradated Pandiculation

Pandiculation is a simple process of contraction and elongation in the muscles. In a pandiculation, we increase the amount of activity to meet and slightly increase the level of unconscious holding- to make it more conscious, and to be able to release it. A gradated pandiculation is an excellent way of retraining your body to experience levels of tension and release as opposed to all or nothing. Enjoy the practice!

Neck Release for Full Body Ease

This is one of my favorite practices and one of my favorite sweaters! Did you know that addressing and shifting the tension in your neck can create a global release through your whole body?! Yup! By waking up the proprioceptors in your neck and changing the tone through this simple practice, you can shift tension to relaxation elsewhere in your body. While I did it in 2 mins, I suggest slowing it down and taking all the time you want.

Pandiculation: A Somatic Practice

Sometimes we are aware of the tension or holding that we are carrying. And more often than not, we aren't even aware it's there. Our bracing has become so conditioned and normal in our day-to-day life that we no longer perceive it - even though it's affecting us. Whatever the origins are: emotionally, muscularly, or even holding a thought, that tension manifests itself in our body. To reset that chronic bracing, and address what's embedded within the tension, we can utilize a practice called “pandiculation.”

Separating the Entanglement

Hey loves! Here's a practice to go along with my recent post: "If someone can't show up for you, they are revealing their capacity and not a reflection of your worth." I call this practice: “Separating the Entanglement of Someone Else's Capacity and Your Worth!" Write out each ingredient of the entanglement on a separate piece of paper:

1) Your unmet needs
2) Their actions/behaviors
3) The evidence or understanding of the limits of their capacity
4) The narratives and beliefs you used to fill in the gap of their absence
5) The internal knowing/feeling of your worth and value to yourself
6) The reflection of your splendor by people who can show up for you

See each component for what it is, not who you are.

Unpack Compound Stress

Does anyone out there feel a little overwhelmed of late? Sometimes overwhelm is caused by our response to one situation, person, or event that has filled our capacity to the brim - possibly spilled over. Other times, too many stressors are piled on top of each other, leaving us burdened-down by the weight of it all. This compound stress can leave us feeling like there's no space to process or get relief. I hope this practice can offer you some support when navigating compound stress.

Unwinding a Negative Belief

Negative self-beliefs can be like shooting daggers at our own heart. They can sound like: “I’ll never be ____ enough!” or “I am ____” (i.e., a failure, worthless, not enough, etc.)

These beliefs are like internal records, often on repeat, and can cloud our actual perception of ourselves or the world. They also keep us from connecting to what is underneath them. Often it is accessing the very thing these beliefs are guarding within us that allows them to be set free.

Shake the Stress Out

“Shake, shake, shake… shake your groove thing. Shake, shake, shake… shake your stress thing.” No seriously, shake it.
